The California Transportation Commission (CTC) has allocated $20 million for Caltrain's electrification project.

The project involves electrifying the commuter railroad's corridor between San Francisco and San Jose, California. It also includes the purchase of electric multiple units for operating the new service.

After a series of delays, the Federal Transit Administration in May approved a Full Funding Grant Agreement for the electrification project.

Caltrain’s allocation was part of a $593 million funding package the CTC announced Wednesday. In total, the commission has set aside $30.8 million for four transit and intercity rail projects, including Caltrain’s electrification.

The CTC also approved $3.1 million for the final design for improvements to Los Angeles Union Station. The enhancements will enable the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority to provide more frequent Red and Purple line subway service.

In addition, the commission will provide $3.76 million for the new Courthouse Station along the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System's light-rail system.
