The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (L.A. Metro) last week announced Target Corp. will sponsor an expansion of the GoPass program.
The program is expanding to Inglewood Unified School District for the 2022-23 school year, making nearly 8,000 students eligible for the GoPass Tap Card. The pass allows unlimited free rides on L.A. Metro trains and buses and on other participating municipal transit operators enrolled in the program, L.A. Metro officials said in a press release.
"We know that private-public partnerships can be instrumental in solving some of our greatest challenges, and one of those challenges is ensuring our region’s young people can get to school, learn, graduate and succeed," said L.A. Metro CEO Stephanie Wiggins.
Still in a pilot phase, the program provides financial relief to families with students in grades K-14 to ensure they always have a way to get to school, L.A. Metro officials said.
During the 2021-22 school year, program participants included 51 K-12 districts and charter networks and 14 community colleges. Nearly 140,000 students took over 5.5 million trips with L.A. Metro and other participating transit systems using the GoPass. This year, 20 new K-12 districts and two community colleges are joining the program.
The pilot is scheduled to end June 30, 2023. L.A. Metro will continue to seek funding sources to extend the program, including through state and federal funds and additional partnerships, agency officials said.
