The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) is pursuing a contract with Alstom Transport Canada Inc. for the procurement of 70 six-car subway train sets for the Line 2 and the Yonge North and Scarborough extensions.

The government of Canada, the province of Ontario and the city of Toronto in mid-August signed off on the TTC's selection of Alstom, allowing the TTC to cancel the current competitive bidding process. The decision ensures the trainsets are manufactured in Canada by Canadian workers, TTC officials said in a press release.

Negotiations between Alstom and the TTC will occur over the next few months, TTC officials said. As part of the potential contract, the TTC requires Alstom delivers a product that is compliant with the TTC's original requirements, maximizes Canadian content and jobs, and subjects its pricing to an independent third-party market price assessment, TTC officials said.
