Monday marked the start of the second year of construction on the Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail Bridge in Portland, Ore.

During the first year, 64 firms worked on the project, which is now 41 percent completed, said Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet) officials in a prepared statement.

First-year construction highlights include 114,094 linear feet, or 2,211 tons, of rail that was delivered and stored along the alignment.

Since the Federal Transit Administration signed off on the project in May and committed to 50 percent funding of its $1.5 billion price tag, work is under way along the entire 7.3-mile extension, TriMet officials said.

Slated to open in 2015, the Portland-Milwaukie light-rail line will travel between Portland State University, inner Southeast Portland, Milwaukie and Oak Grove in north Clackamas County.
