TriMet projects $13.5 million FY10 budget shortfall

Add the Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet) to the growing list of transit agencies facing recession-related budget constraints in fiscal-year 2010. The agency relies on an employer payroll tax to fund 55 percent of its budget; with unemployment hovering at a rate of 8.6 percent in the Portland metro area, revenue projections are down $13.5 million for FY10, which begins July 1.

TriMet officials currently are working to develop a service-reduction proposal to help make up the anticipated budget shortfall. The agency will hold public hearings later this month.
