Last month, the Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon's (TriMet) ridership declined 8 percent compared with July 2008’s total. All ridership categories were down due to the recession, double-digit unemployment and lower gas prices, according to an Aug. 10 TriMet statement. In July, the agency recorded 8.5 million trips on its light-rail, bus and new commuter-rail service. Weekly trips declined 8.8 percent to 1,907,350, weekday trips fell 9.6 percent to 308,300 and weekend trips dropped 5.4 percent to 365,700. Weekly ridership on the MAX light-rail line decreased 7 percent to 729,600. Weekday trips declined 7.6 percent to 113,400; weekend trips were down 5 percent to 162,600. Meanwhile, weekly trips on TriMet’s WES commuter-rail service, which was launched in February, totaled 5,650. Weekday trips averaged 1,130 boardings.
