Twin Cities airport opens new skyway for Hiawatha riders

Today, the Metropolitan Airports Commission will hold a grand opening ceremony for a skyway connecting a Hiawatha light-rail platform and parking facility to a terminal at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

Previously, people who rode Metro Transit’s Hiawatha trains to the airport or used the Orange parking facility had to walk through two parking ramps to access a skyway connecting to Terminal 2. Now, they can use the new $14.5 million, 6,275-square-foot skywalk to gain direct access to the terminal from the platform and Orange parking ramp.

Construction began in February 2010 on the skyway, which features moving walkways, escalators and two elevators.

The Hiawatha light-rail line includes stops at terminal 1 and 2, and runs between the airport and downtown Minneapolis.
