The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's (WMATA) buildings at Eisenhower and New Carrollton have been certified as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold by the U.S. Green Building Council.

By following LEED guidelines, the agency enhances building efficiency, reduces carbon emissions, creates healthier workspaces for employees and promotes community stewardship, WMATA officials said in a press release. With the two buildings, the agency's cumulative total of green certified facilities has reached 14.

The Eisenhower and New Carrollton buildings feature energy-saving LED lighting and controls; automatic daylight sensors; access to natural daylight; state-of-the-art air filtration and fresh air circulation systems; water bottle filling stations on every floor; and green roofs and open green space.

“Our biggest contribution to the region is moving people efficiently and in an environmentally friendly way,” said WMATA General Manager and CEO Randy Clark. “But our commitment to making our buildings as green as possible is another way of living out the values of being good stewards of the environment.”

Three additional projects are underway at WMATA to achieve green certification status.
