Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded a $15 million Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery III (TIGER III) grant to VIA Metropolitan Transit in San Antonio, Texas, to fund the development of the city’s first intermodal transportation hub.
The grant will fund the development of the Westside Multimodal Transit Center (WMTC) in the Cattleman Square area, which will lay the ground work for multi-modalism in the San Antonio region, VIA officials said in a prepared statement.
The WMTC will provide access to Amtrak trains and the proposed Lone Star Rail commuter-rail service between San Antonio and Austin, Texas, as well as bus services. The facility will draw together several modes of transportation and encourage transit-oriented development, VIA officials said.
The TIGER III grant will fund the project’s second phase. VIA already has fully funded the first phase, officials said.
