The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded $472.3 million to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) for a project to replace the North Station drawbridge.
The funding is the largest federal award the MBTA has received to date, Massachusetts state and MBTA officials said in a press release.
The project will allow for more train capacity, faster and more reliable rides, and increased safety on MBTA commuter-rail and Amtrak trains. The work entails replacing the existing drawbridge and control tower, extending the bridge platform and connecting two tracks to the existing network. Additional North Station improvements will include upgrades to tracks, signals, communication and infrastructure.
The Depression-era bridge spans the Charles River and connects the cities of Boston and Cambridge. It carries both MBTA commuter-rail and Amtrak trains for a total of 11,250,000 passengers per year, MBTA officials said.
