When Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority initially installed pubic-address systems in stations, architectural appeal was a top priority. But the focus has changed, and some stations now are getting new systems that improve sound quality so passengers can more clearly understand announcements.



So far, six stations have received new control equipment and speakers, and relocated systems; three other stations are slated for upgrades. Systems now are being installed so speakers are closer to customers, clarifying the announcements considerably, said Chief Executive Officer Richard White in a prepared statement.



Costing about $250,000 and taking eight weeks to install, the systems are targeted for older, underground stations.
