• Bombardier Transportation received a maintenance contract from the Landesnahverkehrsgesellschaft Niedersachsen mbH (LNVG) in Lower Saxony, Germany, for two BOMBARDIER TRAXX locomotives and 34 double-deck intermediate and driving coaches. The $26 million contract extends until 2022. Existing maintenance contracts between Bombardier and LNVG also were standardized; they, too, will run until 2022, increasing the value of those contracts by about $57 million. The LNVG fleet consists of 40 TRAXX locomotives and 220 double-deck intermediate and driving coaches.

• Amberg Technologies announced that the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) recently took delivery of the “first GRP Track Measurement System in North America,” according to an Amberg statement. WMATA purchased the system from Kara Co., Amberg’s North American distribution partner. Terms weren’t disclosed. WMATA will use the trolley-based measurement system for alignment checking and safety certification of the new Dulles Metrorail track prior to its opening, Amberg said.

• Gannett Fleming recently announced that the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s (SFMTA’s) Muni Metro East Light Rail Maintenance and Operations Facility was named the American Public Works Association’s Public Works Project of the Year for 2009 in the Transportation Category (more than $75 million). Gannett Fleming served as the lead consulting engineer in a joint venture with AGS Inc. for the planning, design and construction support of the new $120 million facility. Stacy and Witbeck served as general contractor; SFMTA served as construction manager.

• RailComm was selected to expand its wireless remote-control yard system at Union Pacific Railroad’s Davidson Yard in Fort Worth, Texas. The U.S. Department of Transportation requested the redirection of the hump yard lead tracks in order to keep traffic flowing during the construction of a new highway overpass. RailComm’s Domain Operations Controller (DOC®) System is designed to provide remote control to the redirected switch machines using existing DOC System servers.

• Electro-Motive Diesel Inc. was recognized as a “green company” by the Association of the European Rail Industry (UNIFE) at the association’s annual meeting, which was held recently in Warsaw, Poland.
