The Canadian Forces Liaison Council has recognized VIA Rail Canada Inc. for its support of Canada's Reserve Forces.

At a March 18 ceremony, the passenger railroad received the council's "Award for Excellence for Best Practice in Employer Support for Canada's Reserve Forces." Over the past few years, VIA Rail has stepped up efforts to encourage Reserve Forces veterans to join the railroad's staff, VIA Rail officials said in a press release.

VIA Rail also has worked with its reservist employees to implement a new leave policy allowing them to continue military training or participate in temporary missions during operations in Canada and abroad.

In addition, the railroad has partnered with organizations that help military members transition to civilian life.

"This honor reflects VIA Rail's commitment to serve and support the dedicated men and women in uniform who make daily sacrifices for Canada," said Yves Desjardins-Siciliano, president and chief executive officer. "Veterans and reservists are a real asset to our company. VIA Rail can benefit greatly from their technical expertise, experience, discipline, and leadership, and we have a duty to facilitate their transition and integration to the civilian workplace."
