VIA Rail Canada Inc. soon will begin a $25 million multi-phase, multi-year project to modernize infrastructure between Ottawa and Montreal.

Under the first phase, PNR RailWorks Inc. will upgrade a passing track east of Ottawa with remote-controlled power switches tied into existing Centralized Traffic Control and Rail Traffic Control systems. The project also includes a back track, or an additional track adjacent to the siding, to store maintenance equipment.

In addition, VIA Rail will install continuous-welded rail and complete other associated work on about 40 miles of track between Coteau, Quebec, and Moose Creek, Ontario; rehabilitate a bridge over the South Nation River; and modernize restrooms, the ticket office, baggage area and lounge at the Ottawa station.

The infrastructure renewal project is being funded through the Canadian government's $692 million investment program aimed at improving the country's passenger-rail service.
