WMATA appoints Dougherty to top safety post

James Dougherty has been named chief safety officer for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), beginning April 19.

Most recently, Dougherty was chief safety officer and director of safety, security and enforcement for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Authority.

Dougherty will oversee the department of system safety, which includes all safety involving passengers, vehicles, the environment, health and training, as well as the worker’s compensation office.
