WMATA rolls out new Twitter feeds

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has launched three new Twitter feeds to inform riders about rail and bus services.

Starting yesterday, service for WMATA's Metrorail and Metrobus moved off of the agency's main twitter account (@wmata) into two separate feeds — @metrorailinfo and @metrobusinfo — with service information from Metro's operations control centers via the MetroAlerts system, WMATA officials said in a press release.

MetroAlerts is the system's free subscription serve that notifies riders via email or text message about detours, trackwork, delays or other events that could affect travel.

Also, Metro Transit Police Chief Ron Pavlik introduced the police department's own Twitter feed, @MetroTransitPD, to provide crime prevention tips and updates on investigations.

The system's main Twitter feed @wmata will continue to carry general information, including news releases, major announcements, new initiatives and destination promotions.
