The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is soliciting public feedback on the agency’s proposed fiscal-year 2023 budget that includes service frequency increases and fare reductions.
The budget accounts for the planned launch of Metrorail service to six new Silver Line stations, as well as the expansion of Metro access to Dulles International Airport and the opening of the Potomac Yard Station. Also proposed is a $2.3 billion capital budget to continue aggressive construction and rehabilitation projects, officials said in a press release.
Public comments will be accepted through Feb. 15 on the WMATA website and at public hearings held in person and streamed online.
Metrorail service proposals in the budget include:• supporting the launch of rail service to seven new stations;• making late-evening service frequency increases that started in September 2021 permanent for the Blue, Orange, Green, Yellow and Silver lines;• making weekday service frequency increases that started in September 2021 permanent for the Blue, Orange, Silver, Green and Yellow line;• increasing Red Line rush[hour frequency to every five minutes; and• boosting weekend service frequencies on all lines.
The budget also calls for various fare proposals, such as making fare reductions that started in 2021 permanent and adding new promotions.
