Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is expanding its car sharing program to further reduce parking congestion in and around Washington, D.C., and attract more riders. The authority recently contracted Zipcar to more than triple its car fleet to 48 vehicles, and serve more downtown and remote stations.

Under the five-year-old program, riders can rent a car for an hourly or daily fee. In a recent survey conducted jointly by the authority, Arlington County and Zipcar, 53 of the respondents said joining the program delayed their decision to buy a new car.

“The initial results of the partnership between Zipcar and WMATA have shown significant increases in ridership and decreases in private car ownership,” said Matthew Malloy, regional vice president of Zipcar’s D.C. operations, in a prepared statement.
