WMATA's governance committee proposes permanent bylaws

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s (WMATA) board is considering adopting its first ever set of bylaws that would govern the agency’s policymaking, financial direction, and relationships with customers and jurisdictional partners, WMATA officials said in a prepared statement.

The bylaws were proposed recently by the agency’s new governance committee. The board is scheduled to consider adopting the rules in June. The bylaws would define board responsibilities, such as governing through polices and exercising oversight over policy compliance and results.

“Active healthy debate is encouraged; and once a decision is made, the board speaks with one voice,” WMATA officials said. “Further, the bylaws indicate the board’s role in ensuring regular reporting to the public.”

Since January, when Catherine Hudgins took over as chairwoman, WMATA’s board has taken on several initiatives to improve the agency’s governance.
