The American Association of Railroad Superintendents (AARS) recently named three recipients of 2013 Frank J. Richter Scholarships.

Scott Schmidt, a civil engineering student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will receive a $1,000 scholarship. He is studying railway engineering with a minor in business. AARS also awarded $500 scholarships to Caleb Nyquist, a supply chain management student at Michigan State University (MSU), and Blake Malburg, a supply chain management student at MSU.

Nyquist is president of the General Management Association at MSU and spent this summer as a logistics intern with The Boeing Co. Malburg is president of the MSU Supply Chain Management Association and has worked as an intern at Abbott Laboratories and AbbVie.

The scholarships are named after Frank J. Richter, Progressive Railroading's co-founder, and longtime publisher and contributor who died July 25 at the age of 97.

Undergraduate and graduate students who have completed at least one semester of undergraduate courses may apply for next year's Frank J. Richter Scholarships beginning on March 1, 2014, AARS announced. Applications, reference letters and transcripts will be accepted through July 1, 2014.
