The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (METRO) in Houston yesterday announced President and CEO Tom Lambert will retire Dec. 31, 2023.

Lambert has been serving in METRO's top job since 2013, which makes him the agency's longest-serving president and CEO, METRO officials said in a press release. Over that decade, Lambert led a team of more than 4,000 employees across the authority's 1,300-square-mile service area.

Lambert joined METRO in 1979. When METRO established its own police department, Lambert was named police chief. Also during his tenure, he served as chief administrative officer and executive vice president.

Under Lambert's leadership, METRO expanded light-rail service through the launch of the Green and Purple lines in 2015. The authority also created the Office of Innovation to establish a climate action plan that will reduce METRO's carbon footprint and move it toward using zero-emissions vehicles, METRO officials said.

The American Public Transportation Association named Lambert an "Outstanding Manager" in 2018.
