Yesterday, Michael Melaniphy began serving as president and chief executive officer of the American Public Transportation Association (APTA).

Melaniphy, who has 23 years of experience in the public and private transportation sectors, succeeds William Millar, who retired Oct. 31 after serving 15 years in APTA’s top post.

“Public transportation is essential to our country’s prosperity and economic competitiveness,” Melaniphy said in a prepared statement. “I will work with industry leaders and elected officials to expand public transportation so that quality travel choices are available and good, and American jobs are created.”

Prior to joining APTA, Melaniphy was vice president-public sector for Motor Coach Industries Inc. He also has led public transit systems in Charlotte, N.C.; Wichita, Kan.; Hamilton, Ohio; and Laredo, Texas.
