Norfolk Southern Railway Special Agent Mark Sinquefield recently became the second railroad police officer to attend the Federal Bureau of Investigation's National Academy in Quantico, Va., according to NS' July newsletter.

When the national academy was established in 1935, only federal employees could attend. However, a law was changed in 2001 to open the academy to all law enforcement officers.

A Union Pacific Railroad special agent — who graduated in March — was the first railroad police officer to attend the academy.

"We worked hard to change the law so our law enforcement professionals, employees, customers and the communities we serve can benefit from the knowledge gained by those who attend the national academy," said NS Police Director Steve Hanes.

The academy provides leadership and specialized training, and enables professional law enforcement officers to share ideas, techniques and experiences.
