Yesterday, MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) President Lawrence Reuter announced he will resign, effective Feb. 9, and join Parsons Brinckerhoff to serve in one of the engineering firm’s Florida offices.

“The opportunity … to be closer to my grandchildren was too appealing to turn down,” Reuter said in a prepared statement.

During Reuter’s 10-year tenure, NYCT’s subway ridership rose 31 percent to 1.45 billion; subway service increased 11 percent; and mean distance between failures improved two-and-a-half times to 178,085 miles. In addition, the agency purchased 2,500 new subway cars, completed 116 station rehabilitations and restored subway service in lower Manhattan a month and a half after 9/11.

“Larry has done an outstanding job,” said New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer Lee Sander, who assumed the position earlier this week. He succeeded Katherine Lapp, who resigned last month after serving in the top post for NYCT’s parent company the past five years.

NYCT hasn’t yet named an acting president, says spokesman James Anyansi.
