New York City Police Department veteran Owen Monaghan has been appointed vice president of security for MTA New York City Transit (NYCT).

Monaghan has 34 years of experience in law enforcement and was considered a leader in transportation and security throughout his career with the NYPD. Most recently, he was the two-star chief and borough commander of Brooklyn South, the departments largest borough command, NYCT President Carmen Bianco said in a press release.

Monaghan's history of working with NYCT includes more than 14 years in NYPD's Transit Bureau. He rose through the ranks to become deputy chief and executive officer, the the bureau’s second in command. He also was a key contributor to regional transit security strategies and NYCT's security and emergency preparedness plan, and has received specialized training in transit security from the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center.

"Not only will NYCT benefit from Owen's 34 years of transit and policing experience, but in addition to his distinguished career with the NYPD, Owen is one of the nation’s most recognized and credentialed transit security experts,"  Bianco said.

Monaghan's other leadership experience includes a stint as president of the American Society for Industrial Security International Professional Certification Board, which manages certification programs for security professionals.
