South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Newsome announced plans to retire on June 30, 2022. He then will serve as an executive adviser to the authority.
Chief Operating Officer Barbara Melvin will become president and CEO on July 1, 2022. She will become the sixth leader in the authority's history and first woman to lead a top 10 U.S. container port, SCPA officials said in a news release.
During his leadership tenure since 2009, Newsome has led significant improvements to port operations, grown the cargo base with strategic investments, led the doubling of cargo volumes within a decade and managed vital infrastructure projects, they said. His efforts helped ensure a fluid supply chain and create jobs throughout the state.
Melvin has held a variety of roles since she joined SCPA in 1998. She became senior vice president of operations and terminals in 2015, and COO in 2018.
