The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) yesterday announced Brian Riley has been promoted to chief operating officer of the agency's rail division.
Riley will oversee 555 operations and maintenance employees. His oversight responsibilities include MTS rail operations, light-rail vehicle maintenance, facilities maintenance, wayside maintenance, safety and state and federal regulatory compliance, MTS officials said in a press release.
Riley began his career at MTS as a train operator in 1999 and rose through the ranks, most recently serving as the transportation superintendent since 2016. He succeeds Wayne Terry, who retired from the agency earlier this year after 42 years of service.
Riley also recently chaired the Mid-Coast Extension Rail Activation Committee, which oversaw the 11-mile University of California-San Diego Blue Line extension. Service on the extension opened last year.
Additionally, Riley chairs the American Public Transportation Association Operating Practices Working Group and the San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railway Co.
