Union Pacific Railroad recently named Kurt Zalar general superintendent-transportation services for the Fort Worth Service Unit and Jay Everett, general superintendent-transportation services for the Denver Service Unit. The appointments take effect Nov. 1.

Most recently general superintendent-transportation services for the Denver Service Unit, Zalar will succeed Jeff Jones, who plans to retire Jan. 1, 2012, after serving UP for 40 years. Zalar will be responsible for operations on more than 1,200 miles of track in Texas and southeast Oklahoma. Since beginning his UP career in track maintenance in 1994, he has served as train dispatcher, manager-train operations, director-intermodal terminal operations and superintendent-transportation services for the Wichita Service Unit.

Most recently director of transportation services in North Little Rock, Ark., Everett will succeed Zalar. Everett will be responsible for operations on more than 1,700 miles of track in Colorado, Kansas, Wyoming and Utah. Since joining UP as a general supervisor in 1992, he has served as senior manager-intermodal terminal operations, director-terminal operations, director-train management and superintendent-dispatching center.

UP also announced plans to upgrade 50 miles of track between Tama and Ames, Iowa. To be completed by mid-December, the $6.6 million project calls for removing and installing 45,500 ties, renewing surfaces at 40 grade crossings, replacing more than a half mile of rail in various curves and spreading about 21,800 tons of ballast.

In addition, UP plans to upgrade about 80 miles of track between Jefferson City and Marshall, Mo. Also to be completed by mid-December, the $4 million project includes removing and installing more than 24,500 ties and replacing more than a quarter-mile of rail in various curves.
