The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) has appointed Peter Burrus chief of rail and transportation, the agency announced on Monday.

In the newly created position, Burrus will provide executive leadership and strategic management in the development and execution of all DRPT freight- and passenger-rail transportation initiatives, department officials said in a press release.

Before joining DRPT, Burrus worked at CSX Transportation for more than 25 years, where he most recently served as assistant vice president, network operations locomotive management. Previous positions at the Class I include general manager for the Nashville division, general manager for the Chicago division, superintendent of operations for the Florence division along the East Coast and general manager of network operations.

Burrus helped the Nashville division become a three-time winner of the CSX Chairman of the Board's Safety Pinnacle Award, DRPT officials said.
