Siemens, Bombardier to perform PTC work for Metro-North, Long Island railroads

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has awarded Siemens Rail Automation and Bombardier Transportation a contract worth up to $428 million to upgrade train control systems on MTA Metro-North Railroad and MTA Long Island Rail Road.

The agreement calls for Siemens and Bombardier, working together in a consortium, to develop, test and commission a new positive train control (PTC) system for the two commuter railroads, Siemens officials said in a press release issued yesterday.

The project will involve about 700 miles of track and 1,500 vehicles between the two railroads. Siemens' work will include development, modification, design, delivery, provisioning and supervision of testing and commissioning of the PTC carborne system.

The scope of Siemens' work also includes modifications and revision to the railroads' existing wayside signal in order to upgrade and add ACSES II-related hardware for the two complete PTC systems, Siemens officials said.

For Siemens Rail Automation, the MTA agreement represents the first major signaling contract in the United States since its acquisition of Invensys Rail earlier this year, officials said.
