In the year's 25th week ending June 23, U.S. railroads boosted both carloads and intermodal volume. They originated 288,730 carloads, up 1.4 percent, and 246,128 containers and trailers, up 4.8 percent compared with volumes from the same week last year, according to the Association of American Railroads.
 
Eleven of 20 carload commodity groups posted gains, led by petroleum products (51.4 percent), motor vehicles and equipment (27.8 percent), and lumber and wood products (17.1 percent). Metallic ore loads dropped 29.3 percent and iron/steel scrap traffic fell 14.2 percent.
 
For the week ending June 23, Canadian railroads reported 75,486 carloads, up 4.6 percent, and 54,160 containers and trailers, up 11.1 percent year over year. Mexican railroads’ carloads rose 5.7 percent to 15,606 units and intermodal volume climbed 17.1 percent to 10,761 units.
 
Through 2012’s first 25 weeks, 13 reporting U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads originated 9,311,888 carloads, down 1.6 percent, and 7,280,427 containers and trailers, up 4.3 percent compared with volumes from the same 2011 period.
