Rail News: Rail Industry Trends

AAR: U.S. weekly rail traffic down 13%

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported that U.S. rail traffic for the week ending Jan. 20 totaled 397,553 carloads and intermodal units, down 13.2% compared with the same week last year.

Carloads for the week totaled 173,371, down 22.4% compared with the same week in 2023, while U.S. intermodal volume totaled 224,182 containers and trailers, down 4.5%.

None of the 10 carload commodity groups tracked by the AAR on a weekly basis posted an increase. Commodity groups that posted decreases included coal, down 30.6% to 47,731; nonmetallic minerals, down 39.1% to 18,628; and grain, down 25% to 15,752.

Canadian railroads reported 74,967 carloads for the week, down 21.5%, and 54,327 intermodal units, down 15.6%. Mexican railroads reported 17,500 carloads, up 18.1%, and 11,473 intermodal units, up 24%.

For the first three weeks of 2024 compared with the same period in 2023:
• U.S. railroads reported 1,272,263 carloads and intermodal units, down 5.3%;
• Canadian railroads logged 424,647 carloads, containers and trailers, down 9.8%;
• Mexican railroads posted 81,618 carloads, containers and trailers, up 17.7%; and
• North American combined traffic totaled
1,778,528 carloads and intermodal units, down 5.6%.
