The Association of American Railroads (AAR) has released the 24th annual edition of "Railroad Ten-Year Trends," which provides an economic overview of the U.S. freight-rail industry.

The publication includes data compiled from 1997 through 2006 on Class Is' performance, traffic, finances, employment, plant and equipment, and operations. For example, the book shows Class Is paid about $7 billion in taxes and invested a record $8.4 billion in capital improvements in 2006.

The publication also includes selected information on regionals and short lines, lists all U.S. freight railroads and provides profiles of rail-related organizations.

To order the book, log onto AAR's Web site at www.aar.org. Copies cost $50 for AAR members and $100 for non-members, plus a $6 fee per order for shipping and handling.
