Rail-car orders in fourth-quarter 2022 totaled 11,525 units, down from 25,075 units in Q3 2022, according to data from the Railway Supply Institute's American Railway Car Institute Committee (ARCI).
A year ago, Q4 2021 rail-car orders stood at 13,477 units.
Car deliveries in Q4 2022 increased to 12,242 units from 10,821 in Q3, and from 8,161 units in Q4 2021.
For full-year 2022, orders soared to 60,734 units from 37,562 in 2021. Deliveries also increased last year to 40,735 units from 29,280 in 2021.
Meanwhile, the rail-car backlog stood at 59,698 units on Jan. 1, 2023, compared with 42,993 on Jan. 1, 2022. Last year, the backlog totaled 61,415 units on Oct. 1; 47,461 units on July 1; and 46,208 units on April 1.
