Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America recently contracted Alcatel Transport Automation Solutions to provide automatic train control for a new radio-based, driverless automated people mover under construction at Washington D.C.’s Dulles International Airport.

Part of the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority’s plan to expand facilities, the project includes a 2.1-mile first phase under which Mitsubishi is constructing an underground dual guideway connecting the main terminal with concourses A/B and C/D. The system is expected to open for service in 2009.

Alcatel will provide its SelTrac® S40 communications-based train control, which features automatic train protection, operation and supervision, and central control. The system includes spread-spectrum radio technology designed to provide data communication between trains and wayside detectors.
