Rail News: Rail Industry Trends

All three transportation service indices rose 0.9 percent in September, BTS says

In September, the Transportation Services Index (TSI) climbed 0.9 percent from August’s level to 111.4, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). The index also rose 3.9 percent on a year-over-year basis.

The Freight TSI increased 0.9 percent from August’s index to 109.6 — the highest monthly level since July 2008, according to the BTS. The volume of freight shipments measured by the Freight TSI rose 4.2 percent in a four-month period from June to September; through 2011’s first nine months, freight shipments measured by the index climbed 2.5 percent, BTS officials said in a prepared statement. The Freight TSI also increased 4.4 percent compared with September 2010’s mark.

Meanwhile, the Passenger TSI rose 0.9 percent from August’s level to 116.5. The index increased 2.4 percent on a year-over-year basis.

In the third quarter, the TSI rose 1.1 percent, Freight TSI increased 1.2 percent and Passenger TSI inched up 0.7 percent.
