Atlanta Streetcar Inc. recently awarded a contract to engineering firm HDR Inc. to conduct a feasibility study for an eight-mile trolley line connecting downtown Atlanta and Buckhead, Ga., along the Peachtree Street corridor.

Expected to be complete by second quarter’s end, the study would analyze system location and design; benefits to property owners, neighborhoods, the transportation system and community; costs, impacts, schedule and regulatory issues; financing options and strategies; and public involvement, and options for development, management and operation. The report also will include an implementation strategy, technical documentation, and public outreach and materials.

HDR also is developing a streetcar feasibility study in Miami, and providing advisory services for streetcar systems in Miami Beach, Fla., and Lake Oswego, Ore.

"More communities are investigating streetcars because they need attractive and affordable transit for residents and visitors," said HDR Transit Planning Principal Charles Hales in a prepared statement.
