Yesterday, BNSF Railway Co. announced it selected T.J. Lambrecht Construction and Walsh Construction as the primary civil contractor for a new intermodal facility to be built in Edgerton, Kan., southwest of Kansas City.

In addition, the Kansas Department of Transportation announced an agreement was finalized for a $35 million grant BNSF will receive for the project from the state’s Rail Assistance Program. The grant will be repaid from utilities sales tax generated from the intermodal facility and a separate logistics park development, according to state officials.

BNSF plans to build a 443-acre intermodal facility with various “green” features, including wide-span electric cranes, automatic gate systems and a 60-acre conservation corridor. Construction planning is expected to start by year’s end, with site preparation and facility construction beginning sometime in 2011.

“The Kansas City market has developed into one of the most important freight transportation hubs in the Midwest and the nation,” said BNSF Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Matthew Rose in a prepared statement.
