BNSF Railway Co.’s service performance for United Parcel Service during the peak season was nearly perfect. The Class I registered a 99.77 percent score for on-time deliveries.

During the 25-day peak season — which began the day after Thanksgiving and concluded on Dec. 23 — BNSF delivered 26,397 trailers containing about 39.6 million UPS packages.

The Class I’s goal: zero service failures. To achieve it, the railroad counts on “good saves,” or workers’ efforts to proactively meet any transportation challenges and ensure minimal impact to UPS. During the peak season, BNSF registered more than 100 good saves systemwide.

One event prevented the Class I from achieving a failure-free peak season. In December, a train derailed in Snowden, Mont.

“Even though we can’t characterize this as a perfect season, it was still a success,” said Jim Gordon, BNSF’s director of sales-UPS account, in a news item posted on the “BNSF News” Web site. “The combination of severe winter weather and derailments was too much to overcome.”
