BTS: Transborder freight-by-rail value rose 6.2% in October


The value of freight moved by rail between the United States and Canada in October 2023 totaled $9.8 billion, while the value of cargo moved via rail between the United States and Mexico that month reached $8.4 billion.

The value of transborder freight moved by rail in October 2023 between the United States, Canada and Mexico totaled $18.2 billion, a 6.2% increase compared with the value of freight moved by rail in October 2022, the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) announced yesterday.

Freight moved in October 2023 by all modes of transportation between the three nations totaled $138.5 billion in value, up 3.5%.

The value of freight moved by rail between the United States and Canada in October 2023 totaled $9.8 billion, while the value of cargo moved via rail between the United States and Mexico that month reached $8.4 billion.

Measured by the value of goods, the top three busiest rail border ports for cargo moved by rail between the United States and Canada in October 2023 were in Detroit, $2.8 billion; Port Huron, Michigan, $2.3 billion; and International Falls, Minnesota, $1.2 billion.

The top three commodities — as measured by the value of goods moved by rail in October 2023 between the United States and Canada — were vehicles/parts, $4.3 billion; mineral fuel, $800 million; and plastics, $500 million.

The top three rail ports between the United States and Mexico in October were in Laredo, Texas, $4.3 billion; Eagle Pass, Texas, $2.4 billion; and Nogales, Arizona, $700 million.

The top three commodities and their value moved via rail between the United States and Mexico that month were vehicles/parts, $4.5 billion; computers/parts, $600 million; and beverages, $400 million.
