Bombardier Transportation announced today it won an order for 340 Bombardier(i) Movia(i) metro cars from Delhi Metro Rail Corp. Ltd. The contract is valued at $590 million.

Configured in four-car sets with capacity for 1.48 passengers, the Bombardier Movia metro vehicles feature what the builder terms are the “world’s most advanced technologies in metro vehicle manufacture, such as stainless steel carbodies,” as well as the supplier’s MITRAC(i) propulsion and control system.

Bombardier will produce the carbodies, bogies and propulsion system for the first units at plants in Germany and Sweden; the remainder will be built in India. The propulsion system for 60 four-car units will be produced in Baroda; 77 four-car units will be manufactured in India.

Deliveries are scheduled to begin in fourth-quarter 2008 and conclude in time for the Commonwealth Games, which will be held in New Delhi in October 2010.

Meanwhile, RET — the public transport operator of Rotterdam in the Netherlands – also announced today it had selected Alstom to supply 53 Citadis tramway train sets in a contract worth more than $138 million. The contract “should be signed in October 2007,” according to a prepared statement.

The new Citadis fleet will replace Duewag ZGT trams that have been in service for 25 years. Alstom will manufacture the tramways at its facility in La Rochelle, France. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in mid-2009 and proceed at a rate of four train sets per month.
