Today, Canadian National Railway Co. announced it’s vacuuming up gasoline and diesel products that leaked into Riviere du Loup after 14 cars on a 141-car train derailed yesterday near Charette, Quebec. About 50,000 gallons of materials leaked from four tank cars of which 25,000 gallons spilled into the river.
The railroad also is employing river booms to contain the spread of the products, cleaning up materials that spilled on land and drilling soil samples to assess the area’s contamination.
CN officials are evaluating the spill’s impact on shorelines and fish habitats, and working closely with local and federal environmental agencies. The cause of the accident remains under investigation, CN said.
