CN reaches EJ&E-related mitigation agreement with Long Grove

On Friday, CN announced it reached a voluntary mitigation agreement concerning the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway (EJ&E) integration with the village of Long Grove, Ill. The Class I now has hammered out agreements with 23 of the 33 communities along EJ&E lines in Illinois and Indiana

The Long Grove pact addresses the village’s environmental and safety concerns, according to CN. The Class I agreed to provide funding for various measures, including maintenance of an existing quiet zone, and emergency response training and communication.

CN continues to post progress in negotiating mutually beneficial mitigation agreements with communities along EJ&E lines, said Jim Vena, CN’s senior vice president-Southern Region, in a prepared statement. The railroad works closely with communities that don’t yet have voluntary mitigation agreements to ensure safety and environmental conditions are met in accordance with Surface Transportation Board requirements, CN officials said.

The Class I expects the integration to be completed within three years of acquiring control of the EJ&E, which occurred in early 2009.
