CSXI to double Charlotte terminal's capacity

CSX Intermodal’s terminal expansion plans are, well, expanding. Yesterday, the company announced plans to spend $8 million to double the Charlotte, N.C., terminal’s capacity from 80,000 lifts to 160,000 lifts annually.

Later this year, CSXI will extend track up to 10,000 feet, install additional loading and unloading equipment, expand trailer parking space and improve a line leading into Charlotte. The company also will install a system designed to speed up terminal entry and exit for truck drivers.

“The Charlotte terminal is a key link in our eastern network, and the upgrades will help us provide better service to our customers while enabling us to meet increasing demand in the area," said CSXI President Jim Hertwig in a prepared statement.

CSXI previously announced plans to expand or upgrade terminals in Chicago (Bedford Park), Buffalo, N.Y., and Tampa, Fla, this year. And in September, the company will open an intermodal facility in Chambersburg, Pa. — CSXI’s first new terminal in a decade.
