Canada’s Transport Minister Omar Alghabra yesterday announced up to CA$5.4 million for 20 projects designed to reduce the impact of climate change on the rail sector.
The funding will be issued under the Rail Climate Change Adaptation Program, an initiative of the Rail Safety Improvement Program. The climate change program supports research, development and implementation of technology, tools and approaches to better identify and reduce the increasing risks and impacts of climate change on the nation’s rail sector.
"To further reduce disruption, keep our supply chains even stronger and ensure Canadians receive affordable goods on time, we must continue to work to reduce the growing risks and impacts of climate change on Canada's rail sector," Alghabra said in a press release.
Approved projects to be funded for fiscal years 2022-23 and 2023-24 include:
• CA$300,000 to CN to reduce the impact of flooding on the rail network by creating a washout risk management system;• CA$300,000 to Hudson Bay Railway Corp. and Arctic Gateway Group to use satellite and drone data to better predict and respond to rail incidents caused by water movement issues; and• CA$300,000 to Canadian Pacific to develop a risk assessment methodology to evaluate the structural integrity of CP’s track, prior to following maintenance events that disturb the track structure, such as a tie replacement.
