Car orders up, deliveries down in first quarter, ARCI says

In the first quarter, rail-car orders totaled 5,078 units compared with 2,821 units in fourth-quarter 2009 and 2,374 units in first-quarter 2009, according to the Railway Supply Institute’s American Railway Car Institute Committee (ARCI).

First-quarter car deliveries totaled 2,550 units vs. 3,467 units in fourth-quarter 2009; 4,126 units in third-quarter 2009; 6,463 units in second-quarter 2009; and 7,657 units in first-quarter 2009.

Meanwhile, the rail-car backlog on April 1 stood at 12,990 units compared with 10,462 units on Dec. 31, 2009; 19,343 units on Oct. 1, 2009; and 21,558 units on July 1, 2009.
