Class Is employed fewer U.S. workers in May

Class Is employed 122,518 workers in the United States in May, a 0.37% decrease from April's count but a 0.1% year-over-year increase, according to Surface Transportation Board data.

Three employment categories registered increases between April and May. They were: transportation (other than train and engine), up 0.3% to 4,990 employees; maintenance of way and structures, 0.24% to 29,248; and maintenance of equipment and stores, up 0.01% to 17,826.

The three employment categories that logged month-to-month decreases were professional and administrative, -2.23% to 9,904 employees; executives, officials and staff assistants, -1.01% to 7,916; and transportation (train and engine), -0.43% to 52,634.

Year over year, three categories posted increases. They were: transportation (other than train and engine), up 1.51%; maintenance of way and structures, up 1.17%; and transportation (train and engine), up 1.14%. Categories that registered year-over-year decreases were executives, officials and staff assistants, -3.07%; maintenance of equipment and stores, -2.41%, and professional and administrative, -1.83%.
