On May 27, China International Marine Containers Ltd. (CIMC) and Savi Technology announced plans to form a partnership to co-develop a "smart" container designed to monitor and wirelessly transmit real-time data on contents, condition, location and security status.

Savi Technology will design and develop a smart seal-tag circuit board; CIMC will provide mechanical design of the container's integrated electronic seal. The companies plan to jointly develop ways to integrate electronic tags onto new containers and retrofit existing containers.

The companies expect to introduce the first smart-container version in the fourth quarter.

CIMC holds more than 40 percent (or more than 750,000 20-foot equivalent units) of the global freight-container market; Savi Technology provides real-time software solutions for supply-chain asset security and management, according to a prepared statement.
