The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) program recently reached a milestone: 1 million workers now are enrolled in the program.

Launched less than 18 months ago, the program aims to ensure that any port and longshore worker, trucker or other transportation employee who has unescorted access to secure areas of port facilities and vessels receives a thorough background check and an identification card. The U.S. Coast Guard requires any railroad crew member who provides service in secure areas of a Maritime Transportation Security Act-governed facility to posses a TWIC card.

Currently, facilities in 36 of 42 port zones require workers to have a TWIC card. All ports must be in compliance by April 14. The Transportation Security Administration expects 1.2 million maritime transportation system workers to enroll in the program by the deadline.
