European car builder contracts Magnetek to supply power systems for Italian passenger cars

Car builder FIREMA Trasporti S.p.A. recently awarded a $6.6 million contract to Magnetek Inc. to supply 220 power conditioning systems for passenger cars operated by Italy’s Trenitalia.

The 45-kilowatt power conditioning systems are designed to convert the high-voltage electricity that operates the trains into 380-volt, three-phase alternating current power needed for a car’s air conditioning, lighting and electro-mechanical controls, as well as 24-volt direct current to recharge back-up batteries aboard each car.

The power systems will feature a compact design — enabling them to be installed underneath the cars — and convection air cooling.
